I remember the first time I heard about “The SEO Rapper”. I was working at my old job and a good friend and co-worker of mine said, “Dude, check this out. Chuck, over at Pop Labs did a a rap about SEO.” My initial reaction was just a simple, “What the..?!”
Well, as G-d would have it, I now work at the wonderful world of Pop Labs. Why “the wonderful world”, you ask. Pop Labs has one of the best working environments I’ve ever had the fortune of working. Great peers, smart individuals and who doesn’t like the boss coming around with a cart full of beers on (most) Fridays?
Now, for anyone that knows me well enough, they know I’m like a human juke box. Certain keywords will trigger a random song and I have belt it out. My wife is a great sport about it, even though I annoy her with it most of the time. I also hosted a karaoke show for almost four years. Not to mention the years of choir in middle and high school. With all the behind me, it’s been some time since I had the opportunity to sing again. Since I haven’t been in a band since my last venture, I needed to find a way express my talents and have some fun with it. So what better way then to do a collaboration with the one and only “SEO Rapper” (a.k.a. @chuck a.k.a. Charles Lewis).
I had the idea to do a parody, not a Weird Al - make fun of a song parody, but a smart parody using a pop song. It came to me, as many of my crazy ideas do, instantly. I took Justin Timberlake’s and Timberland’s “Sexy Back” and rewrote the lyrics to something I’m fond of, CSS. It’s called “Coding Back”. The only thing missing was Chuck. I sent him the lyrics and he jumped right on it and added three additional rap verses. Side Note: His flows are sick in this song!! I don’t want to post the lyrics just yet, but have no fear; we’re hitting the studio…..soon. That’s a whole ‘nother post.
It doesn’t stop there though. What’s a song without a music video? This isn’t going to be your run-of-mill amateur video either. Kelsey Ruger, V.P. of Pop Labs, has been enlisted to direct the video. “One element must remain in this video”, Kelsey said, “We have to keep it sexy”. Keep that in mind folks. We’re going to try to make this fun and entertaining for all of our nerds, geeks, marketers and optimizing friends!
For those under the proverbial rock, here’s The SEO Rapper with “Design Coding”
[UPDATE 10-14-08]
We did it! Chuck and I went in to the studio and recorded the song! After almost a month and half of technical difficulties, scheduling conflicts and just plain back luck, we finally got it done. I left work yesterday, went home and got a quick bite to eat and printed the lyrics. Got to Chuck’s house and from there we went to the studio. We did a quick run through with the instrumental and then Chuck went in to do his first verse. One take! Bam, like that, he laid it down and did a second take to stack the vocals. Then it was my turn. Did all my verses, plug-ins and “yea’s!”. Chuck went back in the booth and did his other 2 verses and plug-ins. All together it only took us about 45 minutes to lay down the vocals. After that we just listened to the mix down while the producer started adding the necessary effects. I’m really excited to debut it so, stay tuned! The final mix down will be ready later this week and I’ll have it online. Next up, the music video!
